Some fotos and images
These are a few of my favorite photographs from Picasso and others that inspired me. The one on Guernica inspired me for the cover of Cholos: Dreams & Nightmares. The one of the crying mother reminds me of all of the mothers and others who cry when their child is killed by gang violence. |
Picasso Guernica
Guernica was a little town in Spain that was bombed by the Nazis during World War II. The destruction was so massive that Picasso tried to express it in this manner. Similarly what is happening in our barrios due to gang violence is so horrifying that I was inspired to use one of the greatest Hispanic contemporary painter and painting to similarly show what was happening in our barrios. One person commenting on my cover said, "I don't like the colors and the pictures. It is so awful." I responded, "I am talking about gang violence and murder something not so pretty and not about Disneyland."

UCI Physicians For Social Responsibility
This is one of the many groups that joined our cause or crusade against guns and gang violence. Their angle was simple: as doctors they got tired of seeing young people dying in the hospital emergency rooms. And they were going after the "Ring of Fire" the gun makers of Southern California. Here we are protesting at one in Costa Mesa, CA. |
